"In small and important ways Black authors of children's literature have fortified, energized and empowered African Americans, making it possible with words and images for us to see ourselves--our authentic selves--and to believe in our abilities to change and lead the world in which we live. That contribution has been under-appreciated. SEEING OURSELVES IN THE RIVER, IN THE MIRROR, IN THE WORLD seeks to make clear the power of children's authors, the power of Black writers. " |
